The test lasts for a duration of 2 hours and 45 minutes and has 4 different components. These are Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. The Reading, Writing, and Speaking tests are conducted on the same day while the Speaking test can be scheduled either on the same say or, at most, a week prior to or after the rest.
PART 1: Listening Tasks
The listening task takes up to 30 minutes, with an additional 10 minutes to pen down the answers on the answer sheet. The questions will include multiple-choice questions, diagram labeling, matching, and sentence completion. Prior to answering the questions, you will be asked to listen to 4 different recordings of native English speakers.
PART 2: Reading Tasks
This part of the IELTS Academic test has a duration of 60 minutes. It is comprised of three long distinct reading passages and 40 questions to answer (graphs, diagrams, or illustrations). The passages are either analytical, discursive, factual, or descriptive.
PART 3: Writing Tasks
For the writing task candidates have 60 minutes to complete one writing task and one essay task. The 150-word writing task is about describing, summarizing, or explaining diagrams or texts. In the essay task, candidates are required to produce an essay in response to an argument, problem, or an object.
PART 4: Speaking Tasks
This task is a face-to-face interview that lasts for a duration of 10 to 14 minutes. The examiner engages the candidate in a discussion with short questions related to familiar topics. The speaking tasks are comprised of three distinct parts. In part 1, the examiner asks general questions about the candidate and on a range of familiar topics. In part 2, the candidate is given a card asking them to speak about a topic in detail. Part 3 includes further questions about the topic in part 1.
